>> and unfortunately, the weather is not ideal. >> there is rain moving in for the afternoon? >> absolutely, and there is rain west of the beltway. but right now, we want to get a look live from the national mall. >> reporter: good morning. we don't want any showers coming up at all. despite the terror alert, hundreds of thousands of people will descend on the national mall. tight security expected, and the big draw will be a concert with a new host, bradley whitford, actor from "the west wing." and headliners such as barry manilow, head hunter hayes, the country singer. and kc and the sunshine band. we'll have an interview coming up, but people will enjoy a fantastic show and enjoy the festivities across the national. but i know we have details

about the fireworks display and how the weather will be. we're hoping that the weather holds off. >> absolutely, surae. and i'm with you hoping that the weather will hold off and we'll look at the threat for showers and thunderstorms to move out in time for the fireworks. i think that will play. taking a look at the day planner heading into the evening hours with a bigger threat for showers and thunderstorms. by the time the sun is setting, everything will dissipate quickly. that's the good news for today. 79 at 1:00, and 81 at 4:00 and still a threat for a thunderstorm at 7:00 with the temperature of 77. but once we get past sunset, that shuts off quickly and we have partly cloudy skies at 10:00 and a temperature of 72. and right now, 72 in annapolis, and 68 in winchester and

leesburg and 67 in martinsburg. west of the immediate beltway in the shenandoah valley, we have 2 mile visibility. 2.5 in warrenton and frederick, and closer to the beltway where the rain is not falling, we have clear skies. well, clear visibility. and we will see the rain within the next hour or two in the immediate metro area, and i'm going to time out the arrival of more rain and storms with 9 futurecast coming up in the first alert 7 day. back to you, mike. >> thank you, erica. and we are continuing to track the fourth of july safety as we get ready to celebrate the country's birthday. law enforcement officers will be busy protecting the united states from a possible terror attack. to be clear, there is no specific threat but with 700,000 people expected to pack the national mall, police have special patrols around the land

park. and this follows a warning from the f.b.i. and department of homeland security about increased threats of isis inspired violence around the world. if you are going to fireworks on the national mall, you will be going through a security checkpoint, and could you could be subject to a deeper search. the chief said her department is ready. a false alarm at the navy yard on thursday was a true test. >> we take every event in washington serious. >> again, officials have no intelligence about a specific or credible threat but are not taking chances. police agencies will be monitoring social media, and isis has used online presence to recruit so-called lone wolf attackers. also, heightened security in new york city. no specific threats in the big apple, but arrests overallied

sustained traumatic injuries. tracking metro this morning and if you are heading to the national mall for folk light festival or the foo fighters concert at rfk, metro will have trains for you. >> it will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. and near rush-hour service to accommodate the extra people. track work will be suspended for the holiday, and if you are heading to the mall, metro suggests people walk from metro center or the plaza over to the national mall. and if you're planning to drink this holiday, do not drive. the washington region alcohol program is offing cree cab rides to curve drunk driving. drunk drivers cause nearly 40% of all u.s. traffic deaths on the 4th. it's very easy to get a ride.

1-800-200-taxi on your cell phone. police in hagerstown are remaining tight lipped for a 9- year-old who was beaten nearly to death by leroy wilson for taking a piece of cake. he admitted to handcuffing and beating his girlfriend's little boy because the child took a piece of birthday cake without asking, and the records show this is not the first time. at last check, the boy is unconscious and still fighting for his life. and another little boy in the hospital. police say that 21-year-old aaron vanmeter beat his girlfriend's 6-year-old boy. he remains on life support. vanmeter is charged with assault and child abuse.

weather time. it's supposed to be red, white, and blue today. we're yellow. >> yeah. it's a yellow alert day, and we have rain moving in right now, and i'm going to show it to you on doppler 9000 to see how close it is to the beltway. there it is on the approach. this is just a 3-hour loop for you, and you can see that the rain is going to make it into the beltway within the next hour. zooming down to culpepper

county where the heaviest rain is falling, this is just a light to moderate shower but where the rain is in yellow, that's an area where the rain is coming down at a rate of about a quarter to half an inch. we are going to see that rain continue to push through, and we have the potential for thunderstorms. another one of those day where is a few peeks of sunshine could provide us with the instability to get more rain going and then in the evening hours, things will clear up. bad timing for the barbecue but good for the fireworks. 77 by noon and 78 at 5:00, and we should be the in the upper 80 this is time of year. we'll only be in the low 80s. 68 in germantown and we have the temperatures in the upper 60s, and it is humid out there as well, and now we have the rain arriving. on 9 futurecast, we might have

heavier downpours by noon in frederick county. if you have a barbecue plan, you can sneak it into the metro area by noon. you can see the rain starting to push towards the beltway and i-95 corridor. at 2:00 p.m., raining steadily, and then we will have the potential for the instability to get the thunderstorms going as well. but to the west and northwest of the beltway later in the afternoon to the early evening is a better chance for the barbecue. here is your good news. by the time the fireworks are going off, we're drying out with the potential for showers pushing south at this point. and today is a yellow alert day with a high of 82, and 86 on sunday, and sunday after the holiday, we'll get the sunshine back and just a slight chance for a shower, and then wednesday, it gets even a little bit more unsettled again

with an isolated thunderstorm possible and a high of 86 degrees. in the first alert 7-day forecast, 89 for the next few days and the middle of the work week looks seasonably warm and humidity went potential of showers and thunderstorms. mike, we are not breaking from the pattern. >> thank you, erica. they take to the air to save lives,ed but this time, they needed help. their chopper crashed in frisco, colorado. look at the flames there. only the three crew members were on board, no patients. the pilot was killed and the other two people suffered non- life-threatening injuries. moments after takeoff, witnesses say they could tell something went terribly wrong. >> we heard the helicopter take off, and it started to spin uncontrollably and then crash, a big explosion and debris actually came at me. >> federal aviation investigators are trying to

welcome back. 7:20. i'm first alert meteorologist erica grow. i wanted to give you a look at the beach forecast for this weekend. and a lot of you will be heading down there if you are not already there. and the weather will improve heading into sunday. and this happens to be your week for beach vacation, you're in luck as the weather will be improving. but today, unsettled with a threat for showers and thunderstorms throughout the entire day. as we are heading further east of the beltway, closer to the delmarva beaches, the threat for showers and thunderstorms will hang on all day long even in the evening hours but look at the sunshine coming back

sunday and monday. high temperatures around 80 degrees and we will see highs in the 70s for much of the metro area today with scattered showers and but we'll get up to 82 in downtown, and then we will see the temperatures getting a little bit warmer as we head into sunday. mike? >> thank you, erica. today is the last full day of competition in the world police and fire games in fairfax county. but the games paused last night to honor brazilian cyclist who was killed on thursday. carlos silva was killed and two others are in serious condition after a blowout with a tire and there was a chain reaction crash. >> carlos was a great man and a great policeman. >> two other riders were in serious condition, and one of them was identified as national park service ranger, ryan levins. indian tribal leaders are

good saturday morning, 7:30, and we're gearing up for america's biggest birthday party on the national mall. and beachgoerers are on alert. seven shark attacks in three weeks on the east coast. >> clouds, showers, and light rain falling and we'll clear out the fog but that could lead to thunderstorms later today, we will track them on futurecast coming up. >> happy birth of july. america's birthday once again. >> and we are getting off to a

muggy start and feels summer like. >> are we talking about drizzle or rain? >> later on, it will get heavier, and it will not be as bad as last saturday but we will have the rain moving through and temperatures cooler than average. and we will see that on and off throughout the entire day. let's take a look at doppler 9,000 and you'll see the rain pushing towards us, very light stuff, but there is a pocket of heavier rainfall moving out of culpepper county and prince william, and you can see here on the map moving along route 28 and 15. this will push towards the belt kay, and it will start raining as we head into the 10:00 a.m. shower i think in the immediate metro area, and that's when we'll see the rain falling. as the clouds break up, we will have peeks of sunshine that will lead to thunderstorms. at 1:00, storming in parts of region, 79 degrees and 4:00,

left open near the central district station. an inspection of all department vehicles have been opened. and that was a van like freddie gray died in in a high-impact injury. he was not secured in his seat and six officers were charge inside his indicating. alexandria police will hold a meeting on monday night about the city's first homicide of the year who was the shot to death on thursday night on north fayette street. police are investigating why the woodbridge man was in alexandria and who he was with at the time. u.s. postal service has fired the mail carrier who piloted a gyro copter. the postal service did not appreciate him wearing his uniform on the ride, and he

millions of americans will be heading to the beaches to celebrate the july 4th holiday but this year it comes with a warning after several shark attacks. >> reporter: a rentes spike in shark attacks on the eastern seaboard has some fearing the water. >> scary. i wouldn't go out there. >> reporter: this year, 23 reported shark attacks in u.s. waters. in north carolina alone, 7 attacks in the past three weeks, the most ever recorded in 80 years since they began tracking the attacks. experts are stunned. >> something strange is going on. the trend is normally or one attack in that area in any one year. >> reporter: theories include base fishing, lunar cycles, and global warming. despite the fears, people will

on this evening. i'll see you bright and early monday morning at 4:25. have a good day. okay. yellow alert day, and having an umbrella handy is not a bad idea in the an hour and if you are going to fireworks, bring a blanket. the ground will be wet. >> the ground is definitely going to be wet and another important thing to keep in mind is if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. time to find sturdy shelter. and if you are heading down to the mall, there are plenty of buildings to go into. so don't cancel outdoor activities but stay weather aware. and we will start things off with the weathercam, and it's misty right now and foggy but no rain actively falling in the beltways just yet. it will be by 9:00. 73, and 77 at noon and the potential for thunderstorms in the afternoon hours.

right now, it's 74 in downtown washington, and 70 at andrews. 70 in manassas as well, and 65 in bull run. satellite and radar, you can see that there is plenty more rain on the approach and the cold front is strongly marked here, and that's been unusual as of late. thundershowers and thunderstorms have been hard to pinpoint, and now we have a pronounced line heading towards us. as we head in the afternoon hours, it will be raining possibly in the beltway and heavier rain off to the west, and the outdoor barbecue plans in the shenandoah valley and the panhandle of maryland, doesn't look like we'll do that earlier in the day. i would wait until mid- afternoon on ward, but then the rain pushes to the east and it will get worse points east in the afternoon and early in the

evening. 6:00 still raining in the beltway, and by 9:00, no longer raping in the immediate metro area, and we are going to be able to do the fireworks display. and on sunday, drier air that moves towards us with an isolated shower possible on sunday. i wish i could flip this with the better weather on the fourth of july but this is what we have. a yellow alert day and a high of 82, and 86 on sunday, and then isolated showers and storms in the forecast on monday. the first alert 7-day forecast, and the forecast remaining stag manet heading into the work week. 89degrees for the work week and a chance for a few scattered storms throughout the day. the potential is wednesday and thursday. and pretty much any day through the work week, we could see a shower or a thunderstorm. back to you. >> thank you, er catch the. a right on an orlando

preventible. >> reporter: 19-year-old jameson knows firsthand the dangers of fireworks. he and his friends three years ago were setting off roman candles when something went wrong. the high school baseball star was blinded. his was one of 8700 fireworks- related injuries that year. >> eye injuries from fireworks can be very severe. >> reporter: dr. ann summers knows the danger to fireworks and not just to eyes. more than 40% of the time, arms and hands are injured, the remaining 38%, the head and eyes. more than half of all injuries are burns, and this is what caused part of the dodge jameson. >> it can happen to you. you are not immune.

>> go to a professional fireworks celebration and have a great time and enjoy. >> reporter: never give fireworks or sparklers to children. >> now, sparklers can burn at 2000 degrees fahrenheit. one person was killed after their vehicle was washed off a flooded road in tennessee. police say that the man was driving late at night on thursday when the road ahead of him had been washed out. he clearly didn't see it as the car plunged into the ravine and was partially submerged. by the time the crews got on the scene, the man had already died. and parts of texas are getting federal funds after flooding in late may. they are still cleaning up the mess and winds brought down trees causing widespread damage to homes and vehicles.
